THE BIKE DESIGN PROJECT

Design-Thinking Aimed at a Stagnant Category

A nationally-sited design/build experience challenging five teams outside of the industry to develop a bike to replace the car.

5 Teams. Five cities. The Ultimate Urban Utility Bike.

A ground-breaking mix of design partnerships, city activations and on-going process diaries published with FAST COMPANY, the BDP was the first-ever design competition to invite online audiences to follow teams in their work, attend city-based design reveals, and vote online for the road-tested design they wanted to be produced by fabrication partner, FUJI BIKES.

Five culturally-leading cities with robust design and cycling communities were chosen to field a team.

Design firm/bike craftsmen teams worked from the same creative brief to develop an amenity-rich prototype that could persuade drivers to leave their cars at home.

Audiences followed the design process through (first-ever) monthly diaries on FAST COMPANY’s CO-DESIGN and CO-EXIST digital platforms leading up to the final bike reveal.

City rivalries, local flavor, artist influencers and bike advocacy orgs from each city were all celebrated and leveraged in the fan-building and social media strategy.

Designs were revealed at synchronized launch parties in each of the five cities.

That evening an online voting system launched featuring videos and still imagery of the five bikes in action. A global audience chose the winning design that would go into production with Fuji Bikes.

Press outreach was directed at culture and mainstream publications/platforms.

Bikes were showcased at Interbike, the largest bicycle industry trade show in North America as an inspiration point for modern transport bike design.

TEAGUE x SIZEMORE BICYCLES’ e-bike, The Denny, won the hearts of fans.
